Awareness through Movement: A Feldenkrais Workshop

 I have been teaching my patients what I know about the Feldenkrais method for many years. Feldenkrais teaches you how to observe the movement and the tensions in your own body and become intimately aware of–and connected with–your body. If you are an athlete, it will help you perform better; if you are in pain, it provides a road to less pain; if you are tense, you will have less tension and understand the roots of the tension. It works like how you learned to move naturally when you were a baby, incorporating physics, neurology, and biomechanics within a comfortable series of gentle movements.

What is the Feldenkrais Method?

The Feldenkrais Method® is a form of somatic education that uses gentle movement and directed attention to improve movement and enhance human functioning. Through this method, you can increase your ease and range of motion, improve your flexibility and coordination, and rediscover your innate capacity for graceful, efficient movement. These improvements will often generalize to enhance functioning in other aspects of your life.

The Feldenkrais Method is based on principles of physics, bio-mechanics and an empirical understanding of learning and human development. By expanding the self-image through movement sequences that bring attention to the parts of the self that are out of awareness, the Method enables you to include more of yourself in your functioning movements. Students become more aware of their habitual neuromuscular patterns and rigidities and expand options for new ways of moving. By increasing sensitivity the Feldenkrais Method assists you to live your life more fully, efficiently and comfortably.

Musicians, for example, learn to become aware of places in their body where they hold tension. They learn how to practice and perform on their instruments in as relaxed and natural position as possible (while maintaining proper technical form). However, this awareness can be applied to virtually any task: things as “simple” as getting up from the floor, or turning in your chair.

Instructor Georgia Brown had her first encounter with Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement in the 1980’s when her son was a baby. Life, family and grad school got in the way of pursuing it then, but with more time and the internet she was able to find a training program in Chicago. In 2013 she graduated and is now a GCFP (Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practioner).
