Beyond the Race: Workshop for Runners and Endurance Athletes

Runners, cyclists, swimmers: Training for fall sports and marathon season is exciting and rewarding, but it can also be daunting. Whether you are looking to enter your first race or an experienced marathoner or triathlete, we’re excited to offer this unique workshop/discussion group delving into topics beyond when/how much/how far to run.

A Workshop in Two Parts We are offering this workshop in two parts: Part 1 will take place on Thursday evening; Part 2 on Saturday morning.

Part 1 (Thursday 8/1) will cover diet (specifically, low-carb), psychological skills training program, common issues (by individual and sport), exercises to improve recovery, resting heart rate.

Part 2 (Saturday 8/3) will cover more PST program, recovery, VO2max/lactate, injury prevention, and strength and conditioning.

If you have a conflict with either date, don’t worry–you are free to attend any or both of the dates.

Topics Discussed Beyond the Race is designed with the understanding that there are already plenty of resources out there about training schedules and techniques. Instead, we’ll be discussing the subject in a complementary way. Topics such as trending diets, optimal VO2 levels and sleep routines will be discussed. We’ll talk about psychological techniques–positive self-talk, how to push through discouragement, deal with your personal demons, and stay positive while training and racing.

We’ll also look at exercise to shore up those areas not typically addressed by traditional endurance training, with a special focus on pre-habilitative training/injury prevention. For example, we’ll cover what muscles get used when the main movers break down, what happens when fatigue sets in (and the risk for injury increases).

Leading the Group Justin Hoffman brings many years of coaching background in both swimming and running and a passion for endurance training to his work as a personal trainer at Creative Therapeutics. He enjoys helping people understand the science behind the methodologies and trends in fitness. The application of exercise and physical activity for improving people’s lives and technological innovations utilized to assist this goal are Justin’s focus as he pursues his master’s and eventually doctoral degrees.
